Hebrews 1:13 – Footstool

Hebrews 1:13

Thy Footstool

But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

Sin blinds

The darkness of sin blinds the eyes, it stops the ears; therefore, man refuses to see, or to hear the grace of God. He is in dire need of salvation as a sinner. He needs a Savior, yet man gropes in darkness for a door of his own choosing, and not the door that opens to the grace of God. In his sin he is led deeper and deeper into the cosmic darkness of sin away from God, and closer to the end of his journey to the great white throne judgment of God Almighty. Without faith in Christ man is alienated from God, he is lost with no hope and without God in this world. A man without Christ stands in enmity against God, and enemy of the Divine Being who created him. In the Bible we read a long list of God’s enemies, from Genesis to the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ; these enemies will one day be judged as the enemies of God. There is no greater darkness than to be in this position without the grace of God; for man has turned his back on the love of God which is in Jesus Christ. They have counted His sacrifice for naught. They have despised the Lord of glory, so there is nothing left for that soul but judgment. God will not let the death of His Son be in vain. He will bring to pass the destruction of all who oppose His Son. In the fulfillment of all prophecy the cross not only was a place of judgment for the sin of the world, but it gave the right to Christ Jesus to be the Judge of all His enemies.

The Second Coming of Christ

In the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth, He will judge the nations of the world. At that time, all nations will be His footstool. He will be Judge over all the earth. His enemies will be subdued and He will set up His righteous kingdom. But this earthly judgment is only for the dominion of the earth. The greater judgment comes after the thousand years of His kingdom.

The Liberal Masses

The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand. (Isaiah 32:5-8)

There is no greater darkness than in the heart of the liberal masses today. They have imagined a god that will not judge, and a god that will not even require repentance. He is a god of their mythical love, and liberal theology; where anyone can be saved and still wallow in their sins. Men of reprobate minds gather together and worship a Christ of humanism, and not the Christ of God. As they are liberal in all their thoughts and actions, they maintain an earthly faith in a fabricated salvation. This also applies to the world at large, for as they see a know nothing salvation, they feel themselves in little peril to a God of judgment. Not only by words, but in their very life they deny the God of heaven and earth. They will be judged for their rejection of Christ, their name’s are written in God’s book of judgment, they will be judged by their name and testimony at the great white throne, and all will be counted against them, for they have refused the sacrifice of God’s love in His beloved Son. In Hebrews 1:13, we are approaching the end of this chapter, and we are no longer dealing with the glory of Christ, but the very judgment that He will enact on all His enemies. This will be the rod of iron of Psalm 2 that will fall on an unrepentant world. Read Isaiah 63 and 34. Truly His enemies will be made His footstool. Psalm 110:1,2.

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. (Psalm 110:1)

The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. (Psalm 110:2)

Prophetic Scripture

In this prophetic scripture we see the Judge of the whole earth passing judgment on the earth, and the nations of this world. There will be a conflict of the nations against God Almighty, and they will be subdued with the rod of iron in the hand of Jesus Christ. This will be prior to His great kingdom, when all will be subdued before His glorious throne. But this is of the earth — earthly, and God’s vengeance will come at a later date at the great white throne. The books will be opened and each man will receive the judgment of those things contained therein. The sentence will be read out — their sin will be brought to remembrance, and they will stand naked before God without the blood of Christ. They will have no hope of escape, they will have no opportunity to make all their excuses of the present day, for all will be over, and there will be no hope, they will be outside of God’s grace. God will sit as a refiner, His eternal unquenchable fire ever burns with judgment against all His enemies, but consumes not the soul. The only light that they will see will be the fires of their own darkness, shut up, and out of the presence of God. Endlessly wandering in the fires of God’s judgment, and constantly reaching for a reprieve, and never escaping. God has set before them life and set before them death; yet, they still will not believe in the only begotten Son of God. Today, so much like the days of Israel as in the days of Jeremiah, God has set before them life or death, and they still refused God’s grace and took death.

And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. (Jeremiah 21:8)

In the New Testament, God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus spoke, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. This is God the Son saying to the world, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. This is the message to a world lost in sin, God the Father has set before you His Son of life, and His Son of judgment. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:26-31)

This will be the world’s lot for the entire world has heard the words of truth; yet, they have trampled under foot the blood of Christ. God has spoken and He will make all His enemies His footstool. He will judge them with His eternal judgment.

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: (Hebrews 12:28)

For our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29)

Amen
